During Terry Lyons’ NBA career, sports marketing as we know it today was born. The NBA led the way on a global basis. Lyons oversaw the NBA’s entire global communications, public relations and media activities all over the world. He supervised communications staff in all the NBA’s regional offices, which through the years included those in Australia, Canada, Europe, China, Latin America, Hong Kong, and Japan. He worked with USA Basketball to formulate marketing and communications plans and activities for teams competing in four Olympic Games and World Championships of Basketball and served as a liaison to the United States Olympic Committee and to FIBA, the international basketball federation.
His experience is wide-ranging, from marketing to television production. He worked on the launch of nba.com, the WNBA and NBATV. He managed broadcast, public relations and marketing relationships with ABC/ESPN, NBC, CBS, CNN and Turner Sports, as well as the many sports directors and commentators for the league’s global television partners.
